Monitor the performace of my IBM Flashsystems (SVC, Storwize)

There are several methods to monitor the performance of the storage systems.

  • use the dashboards
  • use the systems Heath map
  • As an enterprise customer, you can also use the analysis of GUI to get an overview very fast and deep to start an analysis.

These are the dashboards you can use:

Recommendation:

  • Start broad
    I like to start with the SVC - All clusters overview dashboard which gives me an overview of every of my storage systems in only one line per graph.
    When you start the dashboard you will see from the BVQ Node CPU usage and cache usage and from the node ports port utilization and port congestion.

     
  • Go into detail
    If needed I can go deeper into single systems with the SVC- Cluster performance overview. You can see the frontend and backend performance of your cluster with eye catching latency gauges and masses of indicators which show more information about the selected cluster. You can use this dashboards also as a wallboard.
     
  • Go even deeper
    You can use MDIsk detail and VDisks detail to see the performance of every VDisks or MDisk. The Node detail shows you deep information about every single node and MDisk group detail is great to find, which volume is overloading your system or which MDisk is perfroming badly.
    • SVC - Node detail .. — This dashboard displays central node metrics from SVC and Storwize nodes.
    • SVC - MDisk group detail — This dashboard shows the performance and latencies of all MDisk groups MDisks and VDisks in a cluster grouped by MDisk groups hosts and controllers
    • SVC - VDisk detail ... — This dashboard displays tables and performance metrics of several selected MDisk groups and VDisks.
    • SVC - MDisk detail ... — This dashboard displays performance metrics of several selected MDisk.
